Fahrenheight 451 Analogy of the birds The novel focuses on the suppression of the masses through the media and censorship. Books have been outlawed and consequently, the fire department has been allocated a new role: burning books (Bradbury, p.1). Guy Muntag, the main protagonist in the novel, is a firefighter who is tasked with incinerating books. He is a troubled man since his job does not afford him happiness. Though he burns books, his conscience constantly haunts him. That is why he hides some of the books so that he can read them later.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Fahrenheight 451 specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More At the beginning of the novel, a moving description of one of the book-burning escapades is brought to the fore (Bradbury, p.1). The exercise nearly drives Muntag berserk. His whole body and mind is engrossed in the exercise and as he throws book after book into the raging inferno he has created, the books seem to come alive. They are transformed into birds before flapping their way into the fire. This comparison is significant. Books contain knowledge, which can easily be lost when they are destroyed. Once that happens, it will be difficult to retrieve the lost knowledge. In the same way, once birds are threatened, they fly away and it is almost impossible to recover them. It is also important to note that books, just like birds, are alive. This is because they enshrine knowledge, which is important in manââ¬â¢s life. The importance of books is illustrated in the novel when a woman chooses to die rather than watch her most prized books set to the flames (Bradbury, p.1). It is clear that people cannot do without books since they lend meaning to their existence. Symbolism: Kerosene Kerosene is used to accelerate the burning of the written materials. Naturally, its smell sticks on the users long after coming into contact. Therefore, Clarisse, being very observant, is able to tell that Montag is a fireman responsible for burning books. This implies that the agents of suppression can never quite shake off the guilty conscience that follows them everywhere they go. In as much as they may justify their actions in whichever way, they lead disturbed lives. This fact is not lost on captain Beatty, Montagââ¬â¢s boss, who states that it is common for a fireman to make off with one or two books during the burning exercise (Bradbury, p. 2). Beatty seems to understand the guilt that the firemen experience and, therefore, allows them to have some books so long as they are destroyed within 24 hours. This is the reason why Beatty expects Montag back at work the same day that the latter takes a sick leave (Bradbury, p. 25). Guilt is the source of unhappiness in Montagââ¬â¢s life. He leads a plastic life, devoid of any feeling ââ¬â or so he would have liked to believe. He discovers that he is not happy after all; he has been wearing a false smile all the time. It is his encou nter with Clarisse that forces this discovery on him (Bradbury, p. 2). Consequently, he decides to drop the faà §ade and look for the true meaning of life. This would involve quitting his job, which he eventually does.Advertising Looking for essay on american literature? Let's see if we can help you! Montag is jerked back into the harsh reality by Clarisse while his wifeââ¬â¢s attempts to block out the real world by immersing herself in electronics seems to fail as she constantly has to resort to sleeping pills. The contrast between Mildred and Clarisse The author introduces Clarisse before Montagââ¬â¢s wife in order to underline the stark contrast between the two women. For once, Clarisse has been described as vivacious: full of life and a passion for everything around her. When Montag encounters her at night, she is having a walk just to enjoy the gifts that Mother Nature has provided. She confides in Montag that at times she stays awake all night in order to watch the sunrise and even the moon (Bradbury, p. 4). She further informs him that were he to look closely, he would see the man in the moon (Bradbury, p. 4). This is in stark contrast to Montagââ¬â¢s wife, Mildred who has totally no interest in nature and the immediate environment. She spends most of her time in front of the TV and the few times she ventures out are to do speed-racing. She has lost all personal contact with others, including her own husband. Her eyes are glued to the screens and her ears shut to the outside world as they are perpetually plugged by ear pieces, listening to music continuously. Clarisse is a member of a happy family consisting of herself, an uncle and her parents. They spend ample time talking to each other. They rarely watch the ââ¬Å"parlour wall sâ⬠and they hardly go to speed races (Bradbury, p. 3). They have maintained their human touch and, therefore, are able to enjoy their lives to the full. Generally, Clarisse is happy and contented with life, unlike Mildred who has to resort to drugs to make life bearable. The contrast between the two women is important because it helps the reader to understand why Montag is drawn to Clarisse rather than his wife. He is completely devastated when he learns about her death. The contrast also serves to heighten the estrangement between Montag and his wife. He is unable to relate freely with his wife the way he does with Clarisse. The contras between the Montags and Clarisseââ¬â¢s house It is evident that life in Montagââ¬â¢s house is radically different from life in Clarisseââ¬â¢s house. In Montagââ¬â¢s house, family values have been replaced with TV and radios. Consequently, Montag and his wife are inexorably alienated from each other. Familial love is completely non- existent and the few times they interact are to disagree on every issue. Basically, they lead separate lives; sleep on separate beds despite being man and wife.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Fahrenheight 451 specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In Clarisseââ¬â¢s house, however, family love is held supreme. The members of the family spend enough time talking and sharing with each other. They have the TV and the radios, but do not allow such devices to compromise their relationship. Due to the constant interaction, Clarisse has benefited a lot from her uncle and parents who have evidently done a commendable job in molding her. In her conversation with Montag, she makes reference to one of the things she has learnt from her uncle: at seventeen, she is most likely crazy. The import of this is that she has learnt to tread carefully. This is essentially a happy family. Unlike in Clarisse house where there is warmth, Mont ag goes back to a cold house. When he gets into the house, he does not wish to draw the attention of his wife. So, he plans to walk quietly to his bed without turning the lights on (Bradbury, p. 5. In a strange twist of fate, it is his attention that is drawn to his wife, who has overdosed herself with sleeping pills (Bradbury, p. 6). The lack of warmth in this house further aggravates Montagââ¬â¢s unhappiness. The two houses are indeed radically different from each other. Bibliography Bradbury, Ray. Fahrenheight 451. Barth Syndrome essays
Barth Syndrome essays Barth Syndrome is a genetic disorder that only effect males. It is an X-linked ressive genetic condition. A mother that carries the genetic code for Barth Syndrome will never show signs or symptoms of it. She will always pass it to her daughters, and will have a fifty- percent chance of passing it to her sons. The daughters will never show any signs or symptoms either. Barth Syndrome only effects only the males. If a male does inherit Barth Syndrome from his mother, he only has a 30% chance of living through his first few years. Of the 30% that are diagnosed, those who seek treatment have an 85% - 90% chance of living in to their fifties. Barth Syndrome had many effects on the male body. An effected male will be far below average in weight and height. The lack of growth in the boys is often looked at as evidence of poor nutrition or some other effects of an illness, the termed used for this is failure to thrive. The effected person will have muscle fatigue. This includes all muscles, even the heart. They have a cellular deficiency that effects their ability to produce energy, causing activities that require strength or stamina, extremely difficult. Activities like walking to growing to writing. The boys also experience Neutropenia. It is a weakness of the immune system. Specifically its a reduction in the number of neutrophils. A neutrophil is a white blood cell, whose responsibility is to fight bacterial infections. Neutropenia places the Barth boys at an increased risk of acquiring serious infections. These infections may include bacterial pneumonia and skin abscesses. Treatment of Barth Syndrome can be tricky. A doctor was troubled with the case of a 3-week-old male baby admitted for congestive heart failure. The doctor did an electrocardiogram that revealed an unusual camels hump of the T waves and progressive thickening of the left ventricular wall with increa ...

Strategic bombing campaign Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Strategic bombing campaign - Essay Example One aspect was that the strategic bombing campaign ââ¬Å"did hut morale [of the Nazi leadership] severely, and the leadership, drawing on its belief that Germany had lost the war because of a collapse of civilian morale, cast its response in accordance with a popular mood that demanded retaliation.â⬠Martel has described the air campaign by the Allied forces in the World War II as ââ¬Å"remorselessâ⬠which points to the intensity of those air attacks and causalities that were caused. The air attacks were so exhaustive that by October 1945, only a few rail tracks and similar, less sensitive targets, were remaining to be bombed. The ââ¬Å"most damaging single raidâ⬠in the war prior to the use of atom bombs was the bombing carried out in Tokyo which killed around 80,000 people and also destroyed about 300000 buildings. It was a fact that, ââ¬Å"within areas devastated by attacks, substantial slowdowns in production occurred.â⬠Murray and Millet have also reveale d that the production of war-related materials in Germany was retarded by the air strikes. The air raids from the side of Japanese forces were also having their impact on the resistance power of Britain as well. It was reported that, in Britain, as early as in ââ¬Å"1940 air raid shelters in big cities were becoming distressingly full of poor, chronically sick, homeless old people who had nowhere else to go.â⬠Hence, it can be seen that the impact has been mutual. Yet, Japan and Germany were greatly paralyzed by the bombings. Germanyââ¬â¢s military traffic was greatly affected.

Operating Theatre Management System Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Operating Theatre Management System - Essay Example In general, Operating Room Management in profit-oriented health-care systems in USA gives emphasis to strategical consideration while in countries with publicly-funded healthcare like the UK; the focus is on operational judgment (McIntosh, Dexter & Epstein 2006). The act of managing and organization all aspects of a surgical suite are to achieve a definite set of objectives. As a budding discipline, operating room management is all the time more examined as how to best: 1) guarantee patient safety and best patient outcome, 2) present surgeons with suitable access to the Operating Room with the aim that patients can have operations in an appropriate way, 3) take full advantage of the competence of operating room utilization, workforce, and resources, 4) reduce patient wait, and 5) augment approval among patients, employees, and doctors. This management skill as employed to the surgical suite is getting more focus as a result of increasing market influence on hospitals from competitors and from customers looking for reduced charges. The surgical suite is generally thought as an advantageous hospital unit. Thus, surgical suites also include a significant portion of hospital budget expenditure. By keeping patient safety constant, the prospect to raise financial increase by means of changing the utilization of already accessible sources is a main goal for managerial study. Incremental efficiency in operating room utilization and operating room efficiency can have significant impacts on hospital workers and resources. Some hospital managers see efficiency in the operating room as throughput, completing the most surgical cases within budget. Later in this article we will provide examples of tools a manager may use to analyze efficiency. The Significance of OR Management Operating expenses consist of, although are not restricted to, the space, know-how and appliances, pharmaceuticals and workforce. Hospital managers have thus focused their interest towards making best use of Operating Room productivity, and consequently hospital productivity, by means of contribution margins. This focus, as well as the increase in demand for promising surgery, has led to a fast development of Operating Room facilities. Traditionally, nurses have been mainly responsible for the daily operation of the surgical suite. All the time more, facilities are employing a physician medical director for the Operating Room, as characterized by a surgeon, anesthesiologist, or both. In some cases, all three fields of surgery, anesthesia, and nursing will be embodied in the daily OR organization infrastructure. By functioning collectively, these three fields can organize all resources crucial to exploit OR efficiency. Since medical requirements and regulatory requirements are frequen tly changing, the idea of appointing a medical director in the OR, an operating room manager, has gained recognition (Siciliani & Hurst 2005). Clinicians normally focus on operational decisions on the day of surgery for instance moving cases from one Operating Room to another, assigning and replacing staff, prioritizing critical cases, and scheduling add-on case. In contrast, upper management

Firewalls and Anti-Virus Programs Essay Example for Free
Firewalls and Anti-Virus Programs Essay Electronic Computers are machines that are designed to make the jobs of humans easier. The rise of industrialization made it inevitable for humans to develop such a mechanical object which may lighten tasks that consume a lot of time and thus, need painstaking care. Humans have been successful in this undertaking, but unfortunately, as humans are susceptible to errors, so do are these machines (Copplin). Computers no matter how mechanical they are, have limitations. Sometimes these limitations are made apparent by humans unintentionally, but there are also times when humans design things that are meant to rival the advantage of their own work. As they have created useful programs, they also made not only inutile but also utterly destructive programs. They created viruses or worms that affect computers, in a way that a disease might affect a person. The solution for ââ¬Å"computer illnessesâ⬠comes in the form of firewalls and anti-virus software. These are programs that are created to counteract the effects of viruses. They serve to both shield and prevent the entry and artillery when a breach has taken place. This shield function involves filtering of all files coming into the computer while the artillery may include quarantine activities to avoid the spread of any acquired virus (Barrios). As viruses are programs that are meant to reproduce and damage the computer system through multiplication, anti-virus programs are designed to act like healers. They are programs that actively search and destroy viruses or malicious programs in oneââ¬â¢s computer. They scan newly downloaded files to assure that there is no entry of infection in the system. Anti-virus programs may be updated as often as the computer owner wishes. This update will enable the program to familiarize itself to developments of new viruses that are spreading or improvement of old ones thus, the security of the system is continuously adjusted and improved to better suit the need of the system (Barrios). There are many available anti-virus programs in the market. Some are installed through CD and others are downloadable without fee from the internet. Two of the most famous anti-virus programs are the Norton anti-virus program and the Mcafee anti-virus program. They were proven by numerous computer users as very effective softwares. They are also affordable and convenient as they offer regular upgrades for the programs on the internet. Like any other programs, there are also disadvantages of anti-virus programs. Anti-virus programs are reactive programs that are designed to respond to the newly developed viruses or threats. This may be considered as a benefit for an immediate cure may be devised and administered readily as response, but there are also facts that point that this nature of anti-virus programs may actually be considered a drawback. Because of this nature, these kinds of programs are prone to false positive results. Since the upgrades are automated, there is a high probability for mistakes. There are anti-virus softwares that take a while before detecting new threats on the net. The shortest time that an anti-virus program may track a threat is three days after it was released on the net. Todayââ¬â¢s researchers are still in the process of improving this and gradually reducing it to a smaller number (Hruska) With such a loophole, computer users may resort to another security option. Other than anti-virus programs, they may also opt to install firewalls in their private or corporate networks. The anti-virus programs serve as the artillery while the firewalls are the shield that re put up in defense of the important files saved in the computer hardware. Firewalls are programs designed to protect private networks from unauthorized entry. It prevents other users to access and extract files or information without permission from a main source that is connected to the internet. Huge companies who consider not permitted extraction of information as a cause for concern may utilize firewalls to secure their files (Ranum). Some firewalls are designed to do one or two things. Some installed firewalls protect a personal or a companyââ¬â¢s internal network from unwanted interchange from public internet. There are also some that may limit the access from the hosts of the corporate network to public services available on the internet. Still, there are other firewall setup that may support the use of private IP addresses for corporate or internal networks while at the same time share one connection to the public internet (Barbish). As according to the above-mentioned functions, there are many advantages in installing a firewall in oneââ¬â¢s computer especially within a corporate network. However, like the anti-virus software, firewalls also have disadvantages. Since there are some firewalls that cannot function as the other does, it makes it impossible to have all the necessary security measures by installing only a firewall. It is not also probable to install more than two firewall programs in oneââ¬â¢s computer. In addition, firewalls do not function the way anti-virus softwares do (Caruso) Given that, firewalls are known to work best with an anti-virus software. Where the firewall fails, the anti-virus software continues to work. They are mutually necessary for each other in order to have a tight security for oneââ¬â¢s personal computer. Anything that passes the firewall may easily be traced by the anti-virus program the moment it does internal scanning of files in the hard drive. While anti-virus programs are designed to protect a single unit of hard drive, the firewall works well as a barrier from malicious programs and hackers for networked computers (Ranum n,p). It also acts as a screen that keeps the private network safe from malicious users in the internet. Some users get confused on what should be applied to their computers. While it is already quite depressing for single unit users, large corporations are boggled by this dilemma. If in any case the threat gets past both the anti-virus program and the firewall, all information that is classified goes out to the public. This is why some large corporations would rather have no internet connection than risk their security (Ranum). Researchers suggested that since one of the two security programs cannot function as the other, it may be effective to use them together. First is to install a firewall that will keep all threats out. Second is to put in an effective anti-virus program which can trace new viruses on the net the fastest among all other anti-virus software. Then install another firewall program for better measures in case both initial programs were breached. This way, the trespassing users in the public internet may be kept out as well as the malicious programs that may destroy the whole system of the computer (Cheswick 90). It may then be concluded that the desire of man to make work lighter have lead to the advent of computers and other technological advancements. However, due to the unquenched desire to improve things, man has also created things that can damage or destroy what has been created. This way man can once again build something that may respond to the destruction that has been invented. In the case of computers, the things that destroy are the viruses designed by some programmers, while the things that respond to the damages are the anti-virus programs and firewalls. The firewall protects a personal or corporate network from any breach by unauthorized person who has internet access. It protects classified information from spreading without permission and also prevents spread of malicious programs that may enter through the public network. On the other hand, the anti-virus acts as support in cases where the threat has already entered the system. The other is the guard while the other is the cleaner. These two computer innovations compliment each other in keeping the files and the entire personal or corporate computer system safe and well guarded from any kind of malicious threats. The Border Patrol State Essay -- Leslie Silko Illegal Drugs Smuggling
The Border Patrol State In ââ¬Å"The Border Patrol Stateâ⬠Leslie Silko makes accusations of the border patrolââ¬â¢s mistreatment of American citizens of Mexican decent, making the argument with almost evidence. Silko, a critically acclaimed poet, sees the border patrol as a governmental assembly addicted to interrogation, torture, and the murder of those they see fit. Leslie Silko certainly makes accusations that some could argue far exceed the boundaries of journalism integrity, and fail to deliver with evidence to back them up. The author of this piece is a Mexican-American living in the Southwest United States. The author is using personal experience to convey a problem to his or her audience. The audience of this piece is quite broad. First and foremost, Mexican-Americans just like the author. People who can relate to what the author has to say, maybe someone who has experienced something similar. The author also seems to be seeking out an audience of white Americans who find themselves unaware of the problem at our borders. The author even offers up a warning to white America when she notes, ââ¬Å"White people traveling with brown people, however, can expect to be stopped on suspicion they work with the sanctuary movementâ⬠(125). The purpose of this writing is to pull out a problem that is hidden within or society, and let people see it for what it is and isnââ¬â¢t. This topic is a problem, but it may not be all that it is said to be. Throughout this piece the author shows us what is wrong with system of keeping illegals out of our country. She opens talking of her cousin Bill Pratt, who she claims rode freely from New Mexico to Arizona without disturbances throughout the early 1900ââ¬â¢s. From a story of freedom of the past, s... ...ontradicting herself, and pointing the finger. Although she most likely has experienced these acts of unjust treatment, she seems to put the reader in the position to doubt the credibility of what she has to say time and again. In wrapping up the analysis of Silkoââ¬â¢s paper the reader is left with a bitter taste. Although Silko points out an important issue, she seems to be too overdramatic when telling of personal experience. Silko leaves the reader too skeptical of what she has to say. The reader has a hard time believing what they read. Silko finds refuge through her writing, but does not handle the subject with as much care as it is due. Silkoââ¬â¢s evidence to not justify her accusations, and that hurts the credibility of the work. Works Cited: Silko, Leslie Marmon. (1994). "The Border Patrol State." Relationship between Satyagraha and Swaraj for Gandhi Essay
The word ââ¬ËSatyaââ¬â¢ means ââ¬ËTruthââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËGrahaââ¬â¢ means ââ¬ËForceââ¬â¢, Satyagraha therefore means ââ¬ËTruth forceââ¬â¢ or the force obtained by the practice of truth. The term Satyagraha is largely associated with non-violence. Gandhi advocated Satyagraha as a means to attain ââ¬ËSwarajââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëself-governanceââ¬â¢. Satyagraha is a political philosophy propagated and practiced by Gandhi and his followers. The practitioners of this philosophy are called ââ¬Ësatyagrahisââ¬â¢. The satyagrahis are guided by the principles advocated by Gandhi based on Yoga Sutra; non-violence, truth, non-stealing, chastity, non-possession and fearlessness. The essential elements of Satyagraha are civil-disobedience and non-cooperation as a means to attain freedom. Civil-disobedience entailed breaking a law which is found as unjust and courting arrest. Non-co-operation meant ââ¬Å"refusing to co-operate with the opponent, refusing to submit to the injustice being foughtâ⬠(What is Satyagraha? ). ââ¬Å"Gandhiji felt that laws which were totally against the welfare of the people could be fought peacefully by organizing mass-protests in a civil wayââ¬â¢ (Jyotsna Kamat) The basic principles of Satyagraha are essentially based on non-violence. It is observed as a basic fact that violence brings more violence. Violence causes destruction, damage to people and property and any violent protest, even for a right cause, invariably leaves a negative mark on the society. Non-violence on the contrary is free from the negative aspects of violence, yet non-violent protests send a very strong message and are successful. Gandhi believed that by demonstrating protests in a non-violent manner it is possible to completely transform the antagonist and effect a positive change. He believed that transformation in the antagonist mindset can only be brought about by non-violent means. He worked to ââ¬Ëconvertââ¬â¢ the antagonist, to truly transform him from within which forms the core values of Satyagraha. Thus the political philosophy of Satyagraha with non-violence as its essence is an ideology that came to be widely accepted and practiced. It is a concept that has been instrumental to the independence of India. The concept of ââ¬Ëcivilizedââ¬â¢ protests with no damage to public property and protesting without resorting to violence of any sort is commendable. Gandhiââ¬â¢s idea of civil disobedience and civil non-cooperation emphasizes a respect for the general rule of the law and is focused on protesting only against any law that is felt as unjust. ââ¬Å"Swaraj lays stress on governance not by a hierarchical government, but self governance through individuals and community building. The focus is on political decentralizationâ⬠(Wikipedia). The basic idea of Swaraj was to evolve a political system where the power ultimately lies in the hands of the people, building a government ââ¬Ëfor the people and by the peopleââ¬â¢. ââ¬Å"The real goal of the freedom struggle was not only to secure political azadi (independence) from Britain, but rather to gain true swaraj (liberation and self-rule)â⬠(What is Swaraj?) as Gandhi explains ââ¬Å"It is Swaraj when we learn to rule ourselvesâ⬠. Swaraj is Gandhiââ¬â¢s endeavor to build a political system where the common man is empowered and he had a spiritual outlook towards his political philosophy which is reflected in the principles of Swaraj. According to Gandhi, ââ¬Å"at the individual level Swaraj is vitally connected with the capacity for dispassionate self-assessment, ceaseless self-purification and growing self-relianceâ⬠. He believed that it is important for people to rule themselves properly and never be a disturbance to the society. Swaraj is when everyone is his own ruler and the government facilitates this individual and community development. Works Cited Jyotsna Kamat. 14 April 2005.
